The Hotusa Group's origins are linked with hotel representation. In 1977, a group of three hotel owners in Barcelona joined forces and launched Hotusa Hotels. The purpose is to provide services together and, at the same time, compete on an equal footing with the main international hotel chains. Thus a new type of pioneering partnership was born in Europe. Just three hotels and a long journey and future ahead. Amancio López Seijas took the reins as Director General and CEO.
1977 Hotusa Hotels is born (Hoteles Turísticos Unidos S.A.) with a portfolio of three hotels.
1978 The embryo of what would be the Central de Reservas (Booking Centre) was implemented and the first associated hotels are incorporated into Hotusa Hotels.
1979 The founding members invite the rest of the partner hotels to become involved as shareholders which constitutes the first Hotusa Hotels Council.
1980 The first Hotusa Hotels General Meeting is held in the Barcelona locality of Castelldefels.
1981 International expansion begins. First hotel partners outside Spain: Italy and Portugal.
1982 The Hotusa Hotels Purchasing Centre is launched.
1984 The first international sales office opens in Rome.
1988 Spain, Portugal and France already have their own Purchasing and Booking centres.
1989 The company's growth reaches record levels: one million stays reserved annually through Hotusa Hotels.
1990 The company Diana Hotelera was formed to group together the establishments that the company will manage directly. It is the embryo of the current hotel division.
1993 The establishments of Familia Hotels is integrated into the structure of Hotusa Hotels. With the direct management of the Monte do Gozo Holiday City, a large residential complex with around 500 rooms in Santiago de Compostela, the group began its journey in directly managing and operating hotels.
1995 The company becomes a shareholder of the Keytel hotel representative.
1997 The amount of reservations of Hotusa Hotels reaches another landmark: 10,000 million pesetas (60 million euros)
2001 The group opens new sales offices in Austria and Greece. With the operations of Hotel Domus Áurea de Roma, the group embarks on its journey in international hotel operations.
2002 Hotusa Hotels becomes Europe's leading hotel consortium with more than 1000 partner hotels and a reservation centre that has a turnover of 92 million and nearly three million stays booked each year. These are the figures of a 25-year-old company. Also, the Group manages a five-star hotel for the first time: the Grand Marina Hotel located in the Barcelona WTC. The establishment opens its doors on a symbolic date: 20-02-2002.
2004 Strong growth in the group's hospitality division, which goes on to operate more than 40 establishments directly. The Hotusa Group joined Alianza Exceltur and acquires 50% of the Hotelius.com reservations portal.
2005 The portfolio of Hotusa Hotels reaches 1500 establishments in around thirty countries. Turnover increased by 45%. The Eurostars Hotel chain is officially launched which starts off with a portfolio of 29 establishments in five countries.
2006 With the acquisition of a hotel in Mexico City, the Hotusa Group hotel division crosses the Atlantic for the first time.
2007 The company enters the US market with the purchase of two hotels in Manhattan, which become part of the Eurostars chain.
2008 The Hotusa Group is awarded the Prince Felipe Prize for Tourism Excellence, an acknowledgement granted by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade of Spain.
2009 Two of the company's flagship hotels open their doors, both of which are five-star hotels: Eurostars Madrid Tower Hotel and the Eurostars Grand Central in Munich.
2010 The Hotusa Group arrives in China.
2011 The hotel operations division experiences a process of great expansion and exceeds the 100 establishments mark.
2013 Eurostars opens its 70th hotel and consolidates its growth with the opening of new five-star hotels in Brazil and Cuba.
2014 The Spanish government awards Amancio López the Tourism Merit Medal in recognition of the internationalisation and growth of the Hotusa Group.
2015 Grupo Hotusa has opened its new central headquarters in Barcelona. This historical building, Myrurgia former perfume factory, hosts over 400 workers from different companies of Grupo Hotusa.
